Read full description of the books:
It seems to be a requirement that herbalists have good senses of humor. This author is not one of the few exceptions and as such this herbal is a pleasant read. The author seems to clearly know his herbs.
He cites specific ingredients and the mechanisms by which they work. He also includes scientific studies backing the herbs. Lastly, he both links herbs to specific ailments (candida in my case) and provides lengthy explanations on how herbal antibiotic treatments in general and specific work. For example, I learned why most scientific studies show Echinacea ineffective (they used the wrong species) and that licorice is a synergist that brings out the best of other herbs.
I found this book to be better than his other book Herbal Antivirals: Natural Remedies for Emerging & Resistant Viral Infections merely because Herbal Antivirals covers viruses only. I imagine I will buy Herbal Antivirals if I ever come down with a nasty virus but probably not until then as its recommendations are specific to certain viruses (e.g. Lymes) and don't seem useful now.

Read information about the authorStephen Harrod Buhner is an Earth poet and the award-winning author of ten books on nature, indigenous cultures, the environment, and herbal medicine. He comes from a long line of healers including Leroy Burney, Surgeon General of the United States under Eisenhower and Kennedy, and Elizabeth Lusterheide, a midwife and herbalist who worked in rural Indiana in the early nineteenth century. The greatest influence on his work, however, has been his great-grandfather C.G. Harrod who primarily used botanical medicines, also in rural Indiana, when he began his work as a physician in 1911.
Stephen's work has appeared or been profiled in publications throughout North America and Europe including Common Boundary, Apotheosis, Shaman's Drum, The New York Times, CNN, and Good Morning America. Stephen lectures yearly throughout the United States on herbal medicine, the sacredness of plants, the intelligence of Nature, and the states of mind necessary for successful habitation of Earth.
Stephen has served as president of the Colorado Association for Healing Practitioners and as a lobbyist on herbal and holistic medicines and education in the Colorado legislature. He lives in New Mexico.
