Synopsis: Four adorable animals are all afraid of the fox in the dark and hide in Rabbit’s house for shelter. The story works extremely well as a read aloud; written in a rhyming format, the book lends itself to doing voices and can be read with a lot of expression. The illustrations are done in a sketch-like, beautiful style and have a unique look with a lot of variety as far as close-ups and multiple small pictures on a page. Most children can relate to the Rabbit, who shows us that sometimes you have to share even if you don’t want to because it’s the right thing to do. Also, in the end the animals realize that the fox isn’t scary after all. He was a small baby fox who had lost his mother and was also scared of the dark. This is a good launching point for a conversation about perspective and being careful not to judge people inaccurately.

Teaching Ideas:

1) For 2nd grade (or possibly later in 1st), students could create an extra page to the storybook where another animal (they can pick their favorite) comes to visit the Rabbit seeking shelter from the fox. The story follows a repetitive sequence where each animal that visits says similar lines about being afraid of the fox and needing a place to hide, so this easily suits creating/adding a page.

Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.3: Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.

2) Students could write and illustrate the writing prompt, “Talk about a time someone shared with you and how it made you feel?” This ties into how Rabbit had to share by letting the other animals sleep in his bed even though he didn’t really want to.

Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.3: Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.

3) For kindergarten, this is a great book for exposure to rhyming words. It would work well as an interactive read aloud drawing attention to the rhyming words along the way. You could also do a follow-up activity recounting rhyming words just read in the book.

Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.A: Recognize and produce rhyming words.
